What is Soulseek? Is it Really Worth Using?

Soulseek

1/3

Soulseek is a peer-to Peer (P2P) computer software and file sharing network. The word Soulseek may either refer to (a) one of its two peer-to peer (P2P) networking protocols, or (b) one or more of its user clients. The Soulseek network was launched in May 1998, with the software named RealTime Now. The primary focus of this software was to allow users of computers with simultaneous network connections to each other to create what are called “virtual LANs” (VLAN’s), which have all the capabilities of local area networks (LAN’s) except for the ability to transmit data over the Internet. The Soulseek software was modified in order to allow users on separate computers to also share the same files with those on the same computer, and later, with other computers in the same network, and so on.

In order to use Soulseek, you will need to create a “search list” of the type shown below. This search list will be used to locate individual files whose names match your search criteria. By typing in the name of a file, the search page of Soulseek will search the Internet for any matching information regarding that particular file and the exact matching search list.

Soulseek is an open source P2P software. Users of Soulseek have the option of downloading the entire program, or they can opt to download only the Search List feature. If you choose to download the whole program, you will have the ability to synchronize your files on your computer with those on the Soulseek server. All your saved files will be under your central database. You may then access these files from the Soulseek client (or from the browser if you have configured your browser to use the Soulseek client).
